THE DRIVE & ENGINE
The M5 Competition was introduced in August 2018, with many marked improvements over the outgoing model.
The most major departure being the All Wheel Drive system “X-Drive”, although retaining a rear wheel drive bias. The system can be disabled, by way of the ESC button (electronic stability control), thus returning to a rear wheel drive only format, should you prefer.
Even accommodating the 4WD system, this model manages a staggering 40kg weight saving over the previous generation M5.
Stiffer springs, increased front camber, lower ride height, re-designed exhaust, and active M-Differential which improves driving stability in more extreme conditions.
The front engine, twin turbo-charged, 4.4 litre V8 develops up to a remarkable 625bhp @ 6000rpm, and torque figures of 750 N.m. / 553 lb-ft. Unsurprisingly, with this amount of explosive power harnessed under your right foot, 0-60 mph can be reached in 2.8 secs, 0-100 mph in 6.6 secs, onward to a limited 155mph, unlimited 190 mph.
Another major up-grade, is the use of a Torque Converter, not a dual clutch system to assist the 8 speed ZF 8HP transmission. This has proved to be far more reliable, while sacrificing none of the gear selection speed.
From an ownership perspective, this should also prove less costly to maintain in future.
A one owner, low mileage, M5 Competition, with shattering performance, representing a massive saving over buying a new example.
