EXTERIOR

Looking simply superb in the factory colour 444 Sand Beige, which really suits the classic lines of this wonderful 123 TE. Can any estate car be considered as elegant or cool? All the chrome work is in superb order, with only minimal marking of the front lower bumper. However, following machine polishing, this now looks in fine shape. The chrome hubcaps have body coloured centres, and replicate the 3 pointed star, which adorns the famous chrome grill.

No scratches, cracks, car park dinks or corrosion to be seen, even across the vast expanse of bodywork, testament to the level of care given by this special Mercedes one and only private owner.

Designed when quality and engineering mattered above all else, and before the “accounts” took over in the boardroom.

Mercedes own promotional literature at the time, much of which is included with the car.

It even states “Refined efficiency as a principal”!

INTERIOR

A delightful dark contrast to the exterior, the factory 057 Hennarot – Henna Red remains in an extraordinary condition, evidence of the high quality of the original materials being incorporated. These cars were built to last a lifetime of hash family, daily use and abuse; they certainly have achieved or even exceeded the brief. All seats show virtually no signs of wear, although the driver and front passenger seats do have a few very small areas that appear slightly darker, only due to an upper layer of fabric showing the darker threads below. Certainly not worn through or badly damaged, in any way. Testament to the extremely high quality of original material used incorporated. Door cards remain perfect; no cracks to the dashboard, carpets are completely intact, heavily insulated and original. These could only be replaced at vast expense today, so far better to have the authentic period originals. The headlining appears virtually as new and manual Sunroof, with polished chrome handle, operates without fault. All dials and simple displays are clear and functional, with no scratches or discolouration. The originally specified Blaupunkt Cambridge M23 is totally intact and performs as expected, via the electric aerial.

One of the most amazing features of the whole car has to be the vast carrying capacity. The rear seats quickly fold down to create a completely flat, low load space, capable of carrying a mighty 700kgs, like having your own small lorry to deliver your cargo, but in style and comfort.

In all, a simply wonderful environment in which to cover great distances in comfort.

WHEELS & TYRES

All four tyres are brand new, quality Dunlop 195/70R 14 (91H) so maximum available tread. The 14” inch perforated steel wheels are wonderfully dressed with their gleaming chrome and body coloured hubcaps.

SERVICE HISTORY & PROVENANCE

Originally supplied by Rivervale of Brighton on 18/10/1984, to it’s one, and only, private gentleman owner. This 123 TE never ventured far, remaining in Sussex for the remainder of it’s entire life. Original invoice for £14,456.52p is present in the history file, together with all three V5 registration documents.

Regularly serviced by the supplying main dealer for many years, the original service book is stamped on 20 occasions, up to 107,011 miles, with other invoicing and majority of previous MOT certificates to help validate the mileage.

In 2002, the susceptible front wings and rear arches were replaced, with invoicing for £2367.04p.

More recently, a major service, including all spark plugs, air filter, plus oil change with new filter, has helped to re-commission this wonderful W123 TE. In addition, the high pressure fuel pump, filters and relay have been replaced, together with all new flow and return fuel lines, brake hoses all round, brake fluid change, with front discs and pads,  rear axle beam bush, front bottom ball joints and gaiters, near side rear brake caliper, and replacement exhaust flexi pipe. A new replacement rear exhaust box was fitted, however, we didn’t like the quality, or the sound it produced, so had the original professionally repaired and re-instated, a vast improvement. (You are, of course, very welcome to the new replacement, if you wish!!)  Previously the fuel tank was replaced. The costs of more recent investment into the TE extent to around £3000.00p mark. So this fine Mercedes is fully Hpi clear, with Certificate, supplied with a fresh service, brake fluid change, new 6.5 bar fuel pump, long MOT and four brand new tyres, and now ready to be pressed into immediate service.

THE DRIVE & ENGINE

Incredibly, the engine bay, in many areas, still has sufficient evidence of the original, factory wax-coating, which has help to retard any corrosion, visible in our images, around the bulk-head and both inner wings.

The Mercedes starts willingly, with no hesitation or smoke from the exhaust. Tick-over is smooth, quiet and without fluctuation or surging.

The four cylinder, 2299cc petrol engine benefits from mechanical fuel injection to help develop high torque at lower and medium engine speeds. Relatively economical to, with advertised figures of 7.7 litres per 100 kms @ 90 kmh.

Comfort and safety are high on the design agenda, with progressive power assisted steering and an intelligent twin brake system, which increases power to the other to compensate, should one system fail.

Suspension is independent wheel suspension with twin control arms at front, and diagonal trailing arms at rear, zero off-set steering anti-dive control at front, anti roll bars + double-acting gas pressure shock absorbers front and rear. This provides a uniquely comfortable ride, with self-levelling suspension as standard.

Sadly, cars are not manufactured to these exacting standards or with such priorities any longer.

There can be few better ways to arrive at your destination.
