EXTERIOR

Crouched on lower and stiffer suspension, while sharing the wide stance afforded by the same body as the Turbo model, the C2S looks serious. Originally designed by Englishman Tony Hatter, the 993 is widely regarded as the most attractive 911 ever produced. Glorious, yet subtle details, look back towards much admired earlier models, such as the “split” rear engine cover vent.  Metallic Arctic Polar Silver which presents all round in a very solid and pleasing condition. With virtually no unsightly stone chips or any gravel-rash to be found, even at the usual vulnerable areas, such as the front P.U and swollen rear arches.

All lenses are clear and free from any crazing or discolouration. Glass, rubber seals and wipers are in excellent order.

Available with original Carrera S engine cover and rear spoiler, or Turbo version if preferred. 

INTERIOR

Purposeful and ergonomic, while retaining a high degree of familiar comfort.

The five dial binnacle layout is focused, with the committed driver firmly in mind, having clear and immediate displays.

All materials, including the leather seats, steering wheel and extended dashboard, retain much of their original high quality finish, acquiring only a subtle amount of patination over the last 23 years. The Metropole theme continues to centre console, headlining, door-cards and capping. All switch gear and electric function correctly.

Rear seats, as to be expected, appear virtually un-used, and by dropping forward afford a very usable, flat stowage area.

 

 

WHEELS & TYRES

All four alloy wheels remain in an excellent condition, with no scratches, scuffs or kerbing marks. Centre caps display the black Porsche shield on a silver background and are all present. The four pot brake callipers are all gleaming bright red with un-marked Porsche logo, clearly visible in white script.

Tyres are all matching Michelin Pilot Sport, 235/40 ZR 18 front, and 295/30 ZR 18 rear, all with abundant depth of approx 6mm tread to explore.

Originally supplied by AFN Chiswick on 06/03/1997 and only having six owners since, the last from May 2014.

THE DRIVE & ENGINE

The 285 bhp Varioram flat six, naturally aspirated 3.6cc engine, is accessed, in this instance, via the four speed Tip-tronic semi-auto transmission. This system, introduced in 1996, gives an approximate increase in power of around 15%, however, delivery throughout the powered band is the main benefit, the increased flexibility even noticeable at lower speed and revs. The Auto system is capable of sensing climbs and decents in terrain, adjusting accordingly as required. Although sitting proudly in the Turbo body, drive in the 2S is strictly directed to rear wheels only.

A light alloy sub-fame, coil + wishbone, with an all new multi-link suspension improved the driving experience over the out-going 964 model. Other improvements included dual flow exhaust, larger brakes with drilled discs and a revised power steering.

Performance figures are, as you might expect, impressive, with 0-60 mph achieved in approx 5.2 sec, and a top speed of 168 mph, although the extra 25kgs of the auto, may struggle only slightly to achieve such numbers in reality of course.

Steering, suspension and braking all seemed to perform effectively during our short Test Drive, as did the engine, which starts readily and delivers plenty of urgent performance.
